Culture and Traditions

The Azorean culture, as its own entity is very rich and varied, presents unique changes and particularities as it moves from island.

We have the Cult of the Holy Spirit that is common to all islands, we have very peculiar traditions that do not exist anywhere else in the world, such as the Bullfighting to the Rope, which as its name implies take place with the bull trapped by a rope and laid loose in the streets of the parishes, the Cavalhadas of St. Peter whose procession gathers knights, lancers, buglers and the king who, dressed strictly, make a route that begins next to the Solar da Mafoma and, to the sound of horns, head to the city center of Ribeira Grande, to the church of S. Pedro.

The Sanjoaninas are the festivals of Angra Do Heroísmo. Linked to the devotion of St. John, they became one of the most significant manifestations of the popular culture of the Azores. The Sanjoaninas are a concentrate of the whole experience of the Azorean people in one place, in a single week.

The Carnival season is very lively in Terceira and São Miguel. In Terceira, a demonstration of popular theater called “Bailinhos or Dances” go out on the street and literally go through all the “Halls” in all the parishes for 5 days, one of the most curious traditions of Carnival is also the Battle of The Limes.

In short because we do not have time for everything, we have a universe of culture and traditions very expanded and full of surprises for those who visit the Azores.
