Whale Watching

Whales can be seen in all oceans, but the Azores are one of the best destinations to enjoy an intimate experience with these gentle giants.

Whether it’s a Sperm Whale breaking through the waves in a daring display, a Hunchback Whale or a Gray Whale and its cub gently rising on the surface of the water, there’s something magical about any encounter with these gigantic sea creatures. Whale watching has become one of the world’s most popular wildlife attractions, and there have never been as many opportunities to see these marine mammals as today. Pilot Whales and Northern Roazes can also be seen, in addition to Dolphins and other species.

Observation Sites

The Azores are also a great place to see the biggest whales on the planet: the Blue Whales. With a heart the size of a small car, a Blue Whale can reach 30 meters in length and weigh up to 130 tons.  

Visitors can see these gentle giants from land observation towers known as “lookouts” or they can board tourist boats for a chance at closer viewing.
